VISISTAFF / SELF-HOSTING

Your server. Your workspace.

Run VisiStaff on your own infrastructure, with your own database and deployment.

Start with the source

The setup below applies to a VisiStaff source checkout. A public source download is not linked here yet.

Run a local workspace

Install Rust/Cargo, PostgreSQL command-line tools, Bash, and Python 3. From your VisiStaff checkout, run:

bash scripts/dev.sh

Open http://127.0.0.1:7315 in your browser. The helper creates a local development database. To stop that database later, run:

bash scripts/postgres.sh stop

Use an existing database

Set DATABASE_URL to your PostgreSQL connection string before running the helper. The server applies its bundled migrations at startup. Keep credentials outside source control.

STAFF_BIND controls the listening address. Set STAFF_PUBLIC_ORIGIN to the exact browser origin used to access the app.

Use the CLI

The CLI connects to the same API as the browser interface. Build it from your checkout:

cargo build --locked -p staff-cli

Select your server when signing in:

./target/debug/staff --server https://your-server.example login --email you@example.com

Replace the example server and email with your own. Password entry uses a hidden prompt. Run ./target/debug/staff --help for the available commands.

Deploy beyond your machine

The source checkout includes a Dockerfile, a Compose configuration, and a deployment guide at docs/hosting.md. Follow that guide for private database networking, HTTPS, persistent storage, testing, and backups. The local development helper is intended for local use.
